Sarah Stifler Lucas

Advance your skills, technique, and personal style using acrylics or oils and a photo reference to inspire your piece. Bring your favorite photographs, magazine images, calendar pictures, etc., and explore the process of transforming them into your own work of art. Instructor demonstrations focus on design, composition, and value. Previous painting experience required. (Not a class for beginners)

Five-week series

Thursdays, 9:30am – 12:30pm

Session 1: October 03 – October 31

Class Supply List

Primary colors for oils or acrylics. (Recommended colors: Alizarin crimson, cadmium red, yellow ochre, cadmium yellow, and Prussian blue) and white.

Brushes in assorted sizes and shapes (Flats and brights are recommended)

Odorless turpentine or paint thinner (if working in oils)

A jar for water or turpentine.

A palette or plastic tray at least 10 inches across (not the smaller styles with the little compartments).

Roll of paper towel

Stretched canvas or canvas board (no smaller than 8×10). Please pre-tint the canvas a light neutral color or color of your choice.

Photographs to use for reference. Suggestions: landscape, still life, floral, architecture, figure, or portrait.

Note: This class is designed to use an image as inspiration and as a guide to be interpreted and altered to fit your desire. These could be post cards, calendar pages, photographs, or magazine images.  Feel free to bring an assortment to pick from during the first class.
