It is a great opportunity for all-level artists to get together and create, in a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. Open Studio at MMoA is a fun way to retain and advance your visual art skills while working with a live model each week.

Sketchbooks offer more than just an opportunity to practice techniques and get down ideas. They provide a way to follow through on art projects. Generating imagery first starts with drawing. This class will focus on both inspiration and drawing. Learn to spot imaginative opportunities and visualize them. Learn drawing techniques and how to begin, develop, and finish a drawing. Fill your sketchbook and walk away with ideas and the ability to further your creative journey. The class will review artists and art movements and students will be provided with a variety of references and weekly prompts.

FIGURE DRAWING IN GRAPHITE

Gain awareness and confidence in rendering the human form through direct observation of a nude model. Understand how the figure is comprised of simple geometric shapes and planes, then learn a strategic and calculated system that includes rhythm, proportion, light and shadow, and modeling form. Each week will feature demonstrations and short pose exercises followed by one longer pose. Individual attention will be given to each student, attuned to his/her level.

PORTRAIT DRAWING

Gain understanding of how to conceptualize and construct a portrait drawing, utilizing a live model each week. Working from quick studies and longer poses, students will systematically learn the “landscape” of the human face. Explore techniques for capturing accurate anatomical features, proportions, and likenesses to develop realistic and expressive portraits. Demonstrations will be given and individualized exercises will be explored each week. The class does not assume any prior experience and is designed to cater to all levels.

SPEED PAINTING: SEASCAPES IN OIL AND WATERCOLOR

The sea is both a source of inspiration and a challenge for artists attempting to convey its beauty, vastness, and changeable nature. Learn to paint seascapes with greater freedom and looseness of brush or palette knife work. Emphasize the quality of light, and the interactions of sky and water reflections. Each week, the class will focus on a different exercise to help abstract and achieve greater freedom. Through demonstrations and instruction in both oil and watercolor, students will learn to see the great variety of colors and values in the sea and sky they observe, convey convincing boats in the seascape, and explore scaling and placement of the boats within the painting for a dynamic effect.

SEASCAPES AND BOATS IN OIL AND WATERCOLOR

Boats are often used as human elements in a seascape to draw the viewer in. Learn how to paint seascapes with a focus on boats and how they can be used to elevate a scene and create a compelling story. Explore ways to use boats as design elements and to paint properly scaled, convincing boats within the seascape. Through demonstrations and instruction in both oil and watercolor, students will learn how to design seascapes with an emphasis on values, counterchange, and dynamic color notes. Walk away with an understanding of how to convey movements of a boat through water and illustrating different types of boats whether at anchor or under way.

Photoshop is an invaluable tool for digital artists. For a first-time user, photoshop can be daunting and scary, but it need not be. Learn basic skills for using Photoshop for digital art. Explore using digital tools such as brushes, layers, and filters, to create and enhance your artwork. This class will provide a walkthrough of the Photoshop program, exploring all its possibilities for touching-up existing images, and creating original digital pieces. This class does not require any prior knowledge of the program or digital tools and is designed to be beginner-friendly.

PALETTE KNIFE TECHNIQUES WORKSHOP

Palette knife painting lends an intuitive freshness to paintings. In this workshop, students will learn to create unique and stunning effects in paintings and explore impressionistic and expressionist styles. Using a palette knife is a great way to build up thick texture and create broken color effects. Learn to make bold strokes with the palette knife, use the edge of the knife to create sharp lines, use a variety of knife shapes and sizes to create lost and found edges, make multicolored palette knife strokes, and lift paint on top of wet layers. The class will also incorporate the key elements of landscapes and seascapes including sky, clouds, water, rocks and grass, fences, tree branches, and sharp edges.

Students will need to bring their favorite paints and painting surface, three flexible painting knives of different sizes (including larger sizes), a mixing knife, and a large mixing palette (avoid paper palettes or palettes with edges; a painting panel, 11” x 14” or larger can also be used as a palette).

Stick and ink is an art technique using a sharpened stick dipped into ink to create free and spontaneous drawings followed by a watercolor wash. In this workshop, students will learn unique mark-making methods to create vibrant abstract images. The workshop will include demonstrations and instructions by two instructors and is suitable for students of all levels. Students will need to bring watercolor tubes, different sizes of watercolor paper, and brushes. Carved drawing sticks will be provided by instructors

Suggested oil paint brands: RGH paints, Rembrandt, Lucas and Gamblin

Howard’s limited palette: White: Titanium white, large tubes. Gamblin has a flake white replacement. Zink white is a cool white with strong tinting qualities but can easily make colors get chalky

Black. Ivory black (Optional) Can be used to make greens and browns.

Red. Quinacridone red (a strong pure red) or Naphthol Red or Venetian Red.

Yellow:  Hansa yellow (a pure, semi-transparent yellow)

Blue: Ultramarine blue or ultramarine blue deep

Green: Viridian (a transparent green used as a modifier)
