I don’t know if you’re anything like me, but once I discovered the existence of Mod Podge, my list of craft projects grew to a mile long! This is a super simple and effective idea that would make the perfect handmade gift for Mothers Day, a birthday present, or for your own personal enjoyment and sense of accomplishment. It’s also a way to use up that bin of old fabric, ribbons, and lace that many of us have lying around that we’re just not quite sure what to do with. Jewelry bowls, containers for desk supplies, toys, potpourri, candy or simply to just sit there and look pretty … what will you do with your bowl?
Supplies: lightweight fabric, cut into approx. 2-inch strips in 2 different patterns, plastic wrap, Mod Podge (gloss or matte), whatever size and shaped bowl you want to use as your form, foam brush, scissors, a piece of ribbon or bias tape
Directions:
- Cover your bowl entirely with plastic wrap. This is your mold so be sure its well covered with no exposed areas.
- Pour out your Mod Podge and thin it slightly with a bit of water.
- Flip your bowl upside down and paint a strip of Mod podge onto the form. Lay a strip of fabric, print side DOWN on top of the glue. Continue adding strips or this pattern, print down, until the bowl is completely covered.
- Paint another section of the bowl, over the first layer of fabric, this time adding strips of the second pattern of fabric, print side UP. Continue until the second layer entirely covers the first.
- If you want your bowl to be durable add an additional layer of Mod Podge all over.
- Allow it to dry overnight.
- Once dry, remove the bowl from the mold and peel the plastic wrap away.
- Trim the edge of the bowl to the height you want. Finish off the exposed edge with a ribbon or a rim of bias tape.
Other fabulous ways you can decoupage with fabric:
- Fabric clothespins, coasters, jewelry, mouse pads, furniture drawers, flower pots, book covers, mason jars, keepsake boxes, bird houses, holiday ornaments… the possibilities are endless!
- Cover Dixie cups in fabric, cut a hole in the back and thread a string of lights through for a homemade light strand.
- Instead of painting on canvas, decoupage fabric onto the surface for a unique art piece.
- Add decorative fabric accents to clothing- jeans, handbags, hats, canvas shoes, wallets, etc…
