Running concurrently with Mystic Seaport Museum’s J.M.W. Turner: Watercolors from the Tate exhibition, MMoA is proud to present a curated, complementary exhibition in our Liebig and Schuster galleries exploring the artistic innovation and legacy of Joseph Mallord William Turner (1775-1851) in a local context.
Achieving international fame in his own lifetime, lifelong Londoner J.M.W. Turner is credited with being the catalyst that inspired passionate young artists like Monet and Pissaro to abandon traditional art salons to paint en plein air, leading to the creation of the Impressionist movement; and, by extension, American Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism.
Featuring works of art pulled from MMoA’s permanent collection, Oil and Water: Mystic art colony artists respond to Turner will focus on Turner’s contributions to the international art world, and how the techniques he pioneered in 18-century Britain influenced the 20-century artists of the burgeoning Mystic art colony.

Oil and Water will be on display from October 11 to November 16, with an opening reception on Thursday, October 17 from 5:30-7pm.
