A celebration of both art and food, Camille Aubray’s novel, Cooking for Picasso, presents a fictionalized account of Picasso’s time in the tiny French fishing village of Juan-les-Pins. No one knows for sure what happened while he was there, but he arrived unable to paint yet left with his creativity restored. What is known, however, is that he asked a local restaurant to provide his meals and that one of his models during this time was a dark-haired woman never yet featured in his work. From this, Aubray creates a story of love and betrayal and a family saga that travels back and forth between the past and present and between New York and France. “Art, like music, has an immediate, visceral impact,” said Aubray. “A great painting speaks to you; it challenges and haunts you, just like a song which reminds you in a Proustian moment of universal truths and personal buried longings.”
Aubray’s appearance will include a talk and book signing. Copies of the novel will be on sale, with 20 percent of sales going to Mystic Museum of Art. The event is free but RSVP is strongly recommended.
