Wayne Thiebaud (1920- )
Wayne Thiebaud apprenticed as a cartoonist at Walt Disney Studios. He intended to work as a commercial illustrator, but turned to a career in fine art.
He is best known for his paintings of cakes, pies, pastries, and toys. His work can be found in many museums such as Museum of Modern Art in New York and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in California. This hard ground etching with drypoint on paper entitled ‘Eyeglasses’ was donated to the Mystic Museum of Art by James P. Quinn in 2019 as an addition to our permanent collection.
Thiebaud was friendly with Franz Kline and Willem de Kooning who were known for their Abstract Expressionism. Though Thiebaud is most often grouped with the Pop Art movement for his subject matter, the artist considers himself “just an old fashioned painter,” and “not a card carrying Pop artist.”
Thiebaud was born November 15, 1920 which means this year he will be 100 years old.
