Howard Park
The Tonalist art movement emerged in the 1880s and was characterized by moody and atmospheric images painted in lighter and darker shades of a single color. Conveying the essence of the subject using a limited range of color, Tonalism focuses on dark and light values to convey an introspective mood. In this two-day workshop, students will learn how to paint in a Tonalist style that is focused on variations of value and temperature in a limited palette, to develop a composition that is unified by the sense of atmosphere and light. This workshop will include demonstrations of brushwork using large brushes and highlights using a palette knife.
