Dr. Michael Sullo

In this oil painting course, students will learn the techniques of the European masters. From the initial drawing through to the final glazes, all stages of the creation process will be discussed and practiced. The instructor will assist each student as they progress in their study and create their own masterpieces.

Techniques that will be practiced are:

  1. Drawing: Producing the proper horizon and choosing the correct vanishing points for one-point, two-point, and three-point perspective.
  2. Painting: A monochrome underpainting in gray, green, or brown. In this stage all shades of gray, proportion, and detail will be worked out.
  3. Layering: Over the completely dry underpainting, introducing color in semitransparent layers of velatura.
  4. Glazing: Painting additional layers of thin pigments called glazes.
